Black spruce back batten with fire class B-s2,d0 for facade applications

This black spruce batten has been treated to be fire-retardant and meets fire class B-s2,d0 according to EN 13501-1. This means that the product is suitable for applications where fire safety requirements apply, such as in façade cladding and backing structures. Not every batten meets this classification, meaning that material selection directly affects the approval of the entire system.

What does fire class B-s2,d0 mean?

Fire class B-s2,d0 indicates how a material reacts to fire.

B stands for a limited contribution to fire development

s2 indicates average smoke development

d0 means that no burning droplets are formed.

This combination is required in many construction projects, particularly for facade systems. A batten that does not meet this standard can cause the entire structure to be rejected.

Not every backing strip meets fire class B-s2,d0, even if the product has a black finish.

When do you need a fire-resistant backing strip?

Application

This fire-retardant spruce backing wood is used as a substructure for facade cladding. Fire class B-s2,d0 is valid in the following end applications:

On a subsurface of at least class A2-s1,d0
With or without an air gap

Processing advice

For correct processing, we recommend:
Railing center-to-center distance of 40–60 cm
Fasten with stainless steel screws or nails
Always mount battens with the bevel on the top side, sloping towards the foil side.
Product is not suitable for bonding

Important: The backing wood is barely accessible after the cladding has been installed. Therefore, carefully inspect the wood beforehand for:

Any damage
Correct straightness of the structure

After sawing, untreated sawn surfaces must always be re-treated with Sikkens Primer WP 112 FR or an equivalent fire-retardant primer.

Maintenance

When the facade is cleaned annually, the backing wood requires no additional maintenance.
